The Los Angeles Rams are reporting that their former quarterback Tom Jarrett passed away this morning at his home in Brentwood. Jarrett led the Rams to an unlikely victory in Super Bowl XIII after one of the most chilling moments in team history

Jarrett took a brutal hit early in the game and remained motionless. The medical team placed Jarrett in a stretcher to move him from the field. Players on both teams were distraught as they feared the worst. Then, miraculously, Jarrett stood up like Lazarus and re-entered the game, playing with notable swagger. Under current NFL rules, it would have been highly unlikely that officials would have allowed Jarrett to continue. Nevertheless, the Rams won.

The incident was darkly shadowed by previous events. Had Jarrett not recovered, it would have been the third quarterback tragedy that season. Joe Pendleton was killed in a bicycling accident when he was struck by a truck inside a road tunnel. During the search for a new quarterback, wealthy industrialist Leo Farnsworth bought the Rams and in what was thought to be a rash act of narcissism installed himself as the new quarterback. Though an amateur athlete, there was no record of Farnsworth playing football, let alone the most important position. Yet, Farnsworth worked the Rams into contention. His life ended when he was assassinated in the garden of his estate—leaving Tom Jarrett to lead the team.

Later, Jarrett would marry Farnsworth’s former companion, Betty Logan. In addition to his wife, Jarrett is survived by his son Max Jarret, daughter Jordan Jarrett Corkle, and son, Logan Jarrett.
The time of death was reported as 10:17am. Of natural causes.
