I keep reading that Trump wants to take the savings from firing government workers and reducing or shuttering government departments and use them to "pay for" additional tax cuts for wealthy individuals and business.

And I read that the House of Representatives "narrowly passed a Republican budget resolution that calls for $4.5 trillion in tax cuts and a $2 trillion reduction in federal spending over a decade, clearing the way for major elements of President Trump’s domestic agenda."

So, the Republicans want to cut taxes by $4.5 trillion, but only reduce federal spending by $2.0 trillion. I guess the difference will be budget deficits that eventually get added to the national debt?

Well then why not leave taxes as they are and reduce the budget deficits and the rate of increase in the national debt? I know it ain't that simple, but I'd like to think it was.

And it can be done:

"Did Bill Clinton pay off the national debt?
Debt held by the public was actually paid down by $453 billion over the 1998-2001 periods, the only time this happened between 1970 and 2018. Federal spending fell from 20.7% GDP in 1993 to 17.6% GDP in 2000, below the historical average (1966 to 2015) of 20.2% GDP>"
