Trump is not doing this alone. The Republican Party is enabling him.
After gutting government programs that help ordinary Americans in order to protect millionaires and billionaires, the Trump Administration is now destroying our entire national economy.
And Trump is not doing it alone. The Republicans are working hard to implement his self-inflected gunshot to our country's heart.
The following paragraphs are a repeat of my earlier post, summarizing the incredibly imbecilic process by which the Republicans are blocking a common sense response to Trump's madness:
- Trump has declared an economic emergency, and thus assumed the power to set tariffs without congressional approval.
- The Senate tried to stop him, by voting on a resolution that declared that there was no economic emergency. All Democratic senators voted for it, and about four or five Republicans did, too. So, it passed.
- The House then had to vote on a similar resolution. A resolution was offered up for a vote, and the House rules required that the vote occur within a certain number of days (I don't know the exact number of days).
- Here's where things become unbelievably F'd up: Speaker Mike Johnson inserted language in the recent budget reconciliation bill that stated that the entire term of the House was to be considered as a single day. That's right - one day. In other words, the clock would run indefinitely and it would still be the same day. That means the House would never vote on the resolution.
Yes, the Republicans are working very hard to make sure that Donald Trump gets what he wants - democracy be damned, the rule of law be damned, and simple common sense be damned.
