Wrt his wife, it's just basic cognitive dissonance where he tells himself "she's different" (probably the same thing Usha tells herself).
I still can't get over how when it was pointed out to Vance that his wife is not white, his reaction was not "she's my wife" or "I love her", but "she's such a great mother"... You know. That's what defines a woman, right? She's not a person. She's not the object of your affection. She's a mother. And a good one at that. It was cringe.
