You know a lot more about these guys than I do.
But, damn, yes, I love jazzy drumming in a rock context, including Mitch Mitchell's playing with Jimi Hendrix*. And, I love the avant guarde piano on this - beside King Crimson, I can only think of album Aladdin Sane that has similar sounding piano blended into a "rock" context.
*there's a clip of Hendrix playing Sunshine of Your Love, and Mitchell plays so much better than Ginger Baker did.
