Early signs were when we started hearing the claim on the right that empathy was weakness. This was around the time almost that the right was wholeheartedly justifying torture through some "24" type fantasies.
I sometimes wonder how much of this is how these people are brought up as kids. Were they taught morality through the Golden Rule or was it more like following God's will. Because if your morality is based on God's will, you will get off the empathy train as soon as you believe you know how God thinks. That's not a luxury you have if you've got the Golden Rule internalized as your compass.
I don't know. I agree that that's what's going on and I'm fully baffled by both how we got here and where we go from here. This thing that's happening now is completely outside of my life's experience and I have no reference points to guide me.
