an ABC miniseries from the 80s, about the"Soviet" takeover of the United States.

Due to their clear incompetence and corruption, I don't see that ever happening. However, putting a puppet in place can get the job done,

The one thing in the series (Kris Kristofferson, Sam Neil and Robert Ulrick) that still sticks with me today involved Kriss, a former Politian who ran for president just before the takeover. A whole bunch of people who survived the takeover were mad at Kriss because they felt he didn't do enough to warn them. He was shunned in many parts of the new US.

That bit of drama rang true to me at the time because his campaign talked about the dangers of the Soviet Union and he was largely ignored . . . .to our peril. Paul Revere works when you win, but when you lose its another story. I wanted the series to explore that mental dilemma. It really didn't.

In a certain sense I can understand why the populace didn't like Kriss. Because if in this fictional story he was a milky toast as trummps opposition today...well.

WE are on the march to authoritarianism, trump is a wanna be dictator, he is on the brink of ignoring the constitution. Those are all lies we are telling ourselves. We are THERE and people simply cannot believe it..... Not in America or Amerika.
