Certainly timing the market is impossible for most people and day trading is a loser, except for a few people. Day to day, the market makes little sense. The long run is a different story.
A pretty sizable portion of stock market invetors show a profit. It is hard to find an investment which has shown a long-term greater return than the stock market. Only a tiny portion of people who gamble make a profit.
The biggest problem with investors is that so few of them take the time to educate themselves about investing. If people spent as much time keeping up with the Benjamins as keeping up with the Kardashians, people would make much smarter decisions.
However, it is nice to see the massive growth in index funds, indicating that people are paying more attention to expenses in investing.
