2023 the US federal agency EIA concluded 2.3% of all the electricity used in the US was used by bitcoin or other crypto mining. in 2025 Trump took office, got in with the crypto guys and voila, the same agency EIA concluded now only 0.6% of all electrical usage is for crypto mining.

even accounting for the increase in AI usage in that 18 months, which is substantial, experts said there's no way it's 75% less of the total usage than it was 18 months ago. So what changed? Trump started making billions in his crypto accounts.

The Department of Energy today put out a message saying we can't fulfill our needs for electricity going forward without substantially increasing our use of coal and natural gas. They detailed the reality of how much power AI is going to use, but tney completely ignored that crypto is consuming so much power.

One of the lefty sites online then asked about a half dozen AI chatbots what would be the best thing to do for the US to be able to meet the future electrical demands of AI. Oddly not a single one recommended using more coal!
