I'm gonna go complete old school and claim that most people are not invested in politics because they don't see their votes making any real difference (and in some cases, just making things worse). I'd like to think that they instinctively understand that this is because their options are severely limited. They are allowed to get any color Model T, so to speak, as long as it's blue or red. That has a tendency to curb voter appetite and faith in the system that consistently fails them at almost every turn, where the only difference is a matter of degrees.
Yes, it's a small miracle that we lasted this long. It'll be even a greater miracle if we get the chance to fix it in 3 years. Not placing too much hope in that, obviously.
