I wouldn't say MAGA is dying

MAGA dies when Trump dies ... even then, I'm not sure.

Last night I was watching the American Experience episode on the Hard Hat Riot. It was eerie. The same dynamics. The same demographic. The same mistakes on the left. The only difference was that that event took place when the American Dream was still alive and relatively healthy (= pre-Reagan). It has only gotten worse.

I have also been thinking about how MAGA was a big lost opportunity. If we had, back in 2008, a healthy party on the left rather than this facsimile that was still under the spell of neoliberalism, the working class would have been exposed to a competing theory that might have led to a better understanding of how we eneded up where we ended up and how class conflict plays such a crucial role in all that. But they got nothing of substance from the centrists who ruled, so they naturally gravitated towards the simpler explanation provided by the fascist rhetoric about how this ethnic group or that was responsible for everything going wrong.

MAGA dies when the masses eventually realize that their problem is not with immigrants or non-whites and non-christians, but with capitalism. On the one hand they are so close to seeing it, on the other, they can never scale that last wall without the left's help. And for that to happen, the Democratic Party, i.e., the only party out there with a big enough megaphone, to be captured by people who have a better understanding of capitalism and class relation, and values those at least as equally, and if not more than, individualism and individual identities.

MAGA is not ever going to die until a better and more effective counter-narrative emerges from the non-MAGA that speaks to the foundational problems the MAGA people are no longer able to ignore.
