Nor is "so help me, God" part of the oath. It's just traditional.

John Quincy Adams took the oath with his hand on the U S. Constitution.

Everyone's fine with swearing a Constitutional oath over religious scripture . . . until it's someone else's.

I'm a Christian; I think JQA did the right thing.
