They were the ones who failed to make the case. I would argue that they failed much earlier, at the stage of even building their case. And I would further argue that they failed at an even earlier step, the step of analysis of where the country is and what the issues are.
I would argue even further that our mission #1 should be generating an alternative grounded in reality rather than the mid-century modern myths passed on from generation to generation that the party leadership was practically baptized in. Democrats need to take a sober (and somber) look at where we are as a nation, right now, and develop a viewpoint and an identity built around that. (The case can be made that they also start considering building stronger alliances with people to their left than constantly trying to chase increasingly less moderate right-wingers -- if the next Democratic presidential candidate campaigns with MTG, I'm gonna barf.)
IOW, it's easy for the public to be conned by a conman who's selling a well-polished sh*tty product when all you have to offer is a rusty 50 year old model that supposedly worked ok in its best days.
