Kim Stanley Robinson's trilogy.

Mars is a deadly place.
(The moon is even deadlier.)

You don't jump into those places without massive infrastructure with multiple failsafe mechanisms.

I don't think any of KSR's books touched in the problems create by a planet that does not have magnetic fields. E just dealt with the atmosphere, IIRC (it's been a while since I read them).
