the region during the cold war because they saw it as a source of local resistance against the spread of communism. They referred to it as a "green belt", I believe, intended to contain Soviet influence.
The US was in bed with islamic fundamentalism, instrumental in its spread across the region (funded by the Saudis, who used this as a conduit to spread their Wahhabi influence in areas that had a much looser local adaptations of islam for a while before the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the Mujahedeen became Reagan's best buds.
