three times before it finally did, and each time a bunch of generals form outside of the traditional Roman homeland stepped in and saved the empire and gave it a few more centuries of life. Mike Duncan (of the History of Rome podcast) made that point specifically to emphasize that each time the empire was about to collapse it was some "immigrant" general who came to the rescue. He was saying that the amazing thing about Rome was not that it fell, but it had a second, third, fourth life just as it looked like it was all over.

Do we have an immigrant leader to lead us after Trump?

Yeah, everything is on speed in the 21st century. And yeah, I completely place 9/11 as the beginning of that collapse. In a weird way bin Ladin actually won, but his victory was hard for us to see because ity was in super slow motion.
