The military does not want a draft ever again.
After Vietnam War, the United States deliberately structured its wars so they could be fought with a professional, all-volunteer force. The experiences of both the Korean War and the Vietnam War showed how conscription could disrupt unit cohesion, hurt morale, have political consequences, and reduce overall military efficiency.
A military analyst once told me that U.S. war planning has long assumed conflicts would be decided within a short window using overwhelming force. That assessment was made before the lessons emerging from the Russian invasion of Ukraine. My guess is the basic concept will remain the same—rapid victory through overwhelming force, but with drones increasingly used as a force multiplier.
