Based on video evidence and Department of Justice investigations, Ashli Babbitt did not appear to be the person who initially broke the window, but she was actively attempting to climb through the broken glass of a barricaded door when she was shot by a Capitol Police officer on January 6, 2021. Other members of the mob used flagpoles and hands to shatter the glass prior to her attempt to pass through.
Key details:
The Incident: Babbitt was attempting to gain access to the Speaker's Lobby, just outside the House chamber, which was barricaded by officers.
The Window: While other individuals in the mob were filmed breaking the glass, shows Babbitt trying to climb through the shattered, secured window.
The Shooting: Lieutenant Michael Byrd shot Babbitt, stating he did so in defense of the House chambers.
