At this point, the best we can hope for is that Trump accepts some sort of agreement that allows ships to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, even if Iran enacts a toll. That would be terrible - it would mean conceding an important international waterway to a tyrannical regime - but the alternatives are even worse.

The alternatives include a full-out war effort consisting of American boots on the ground. And if that doesn't work quickly, I think Trump may get frustrated and turn to the nuclear option.

Yes, that's right: going nuclear in a war that we started and dominated, but could not win because the enemy wins merely by outlasting us on their own soil.

We face nothing but bad choices going forward. Trump was simply too stupid to anticipate the clearly predictable consequences to his incredibly dumb decision.

A brief note about our president's decision-making process: Donald Trump is a coward. As such, he cannot imagine that other people could be heroic. Trump imagined that Iran would crumble under a heavy assault, because that's what he would do.

We are now living under the consequences of putting a man who is both stupid and cowardly into the White House.
