How do we know if the allegations are true?

I'm really torn by this. On the one hand, the allegations seem plausible. On the other hand, politics is a slimy business with lots of big money involved and I wouldn't put it past opponents, Rep or Dem, to set up a false narrative to bring Swalwell down. We don't have the advantage of a trial with concrete evidence, sworn testimony, and all of that. Does anybody here have any serious suggestions as to how to sort it all out?
