The Cuban Missile Crisis occurred about a month before my fifth birthday, and I had no memory of it. I didn't know anything about it in high school, either. Someone suggested it as a topic and I dove in. As I realized what it was about, I was thinking "holy sh!t!"
WWII began about 20 years after WWI. The Crisis began about 17 years after WWII. So a far more dangerous WWIII seemed all too plausible. It certainly got everyone's attention.
My mind sometimes turns to Major Rudolf Anderson, a pilot shot down over Cuba while capturing intel photos. Kennedy let it go; the unavenged death kept the door open for a peaceful resolution.
