Citizens taking an oath on the Constitution is different from elected officials doing so. A citizen doing so would conflict with the concept of freedom of thought and speech. I mean it would mean we no longer have the right to argue against the separation of church and state for instance, no? Whereas with allegiance to the flag, no political preconception would be imposed.
