I think your first point is correct: The party has to be bitterly divided very evenly in multiple ways for Republican candidates to capture the top two spots for the runoff. Not that this is something that can never happen, but it's a possibility in the future. I'm with you on that one.
The second one, however, is a real concern of mine, which wouldn't be under normal circumstances, but we're at a point where the Republican brand's value should be at an all-time low across the state. Granted, head count wise, we are actually very heavy on the number of Republicans out there, and those also tend to be some of the most out there Republicans to begin with. But still … I would love to see the berakdown, but I don't think the votes Hilton got were all and only from people who have been diehard Republicans. I'd love to see an analysis of who voted for him.
Even if they turn out to be the reddest of the red Republicans in the state, we still have a big job at hand to start shrinking those numbers. And I am absolutely certain a Becerra governorship will not be able to pull that off for 4 years from now.
