No network really wants to be the first to cancel late-night television. While most late-night shows lose money, there is still a reputational and branding cost associated with being the network that pulls the plug on the format.

Colbert's show was reportedly losing between $40 million and $50 million per year, and most late-night programs face similar financial challenges. Despite those losses, networks often continue airing them because they provide prestige, generate publicity, and maintain relationships with talent and advertisers.

The could show blank air and it would do better for their bottom line.
