This was a really close one but I don’t think it should have been red. On the play Quansah gets the ball on the tackle but his foot slid over the ball and then catches the Mexico player on the ankle.
The contrast with Balogun’s red is stark on both counts: Balogun didn’t get near the ball and he dragged his spikes down the calf and stepped on the player’s ankle/achilles area very hard. The high contact was not the result of catching the ball and the leg going over.
In Premier League Quansah’s tackle probably wouldn’t be a foul at all, since he won the tackle(i.e., got to the ball first) FIFA officials call the game in a different way than the inbreds and fools who make up most of England’s referees and I don’t know that the red was inconsistent with how the international officials have been calling the game. Factor in that the game was in a huge stadium in Mexico City and that is a tough one.
In general the international officials have shown themselves to be very superior to England’s PGMOL cretins.
Anyway, what a game! Group Stage was complete shite for the most part, as I predicted. But the knockout games last the first round have been great.
