The South Carolina governor will have to appoint someone to fill his seat until his term expires in January 2027.
As for the upcoming election for the seat, the Republican nomination will be picked in a special GOP primary on August 11, 2026, with a runoff on August 25 if no candidate wins a majority Politico. The winner will face Democrat Dr. Annie Andrews in the November general election
Key Republican Candidates
Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette – Seen as a top possible appointment by Gov. Henry McMaster to serve temporarily while the primary is held. She is a close ally of the governor and has Trump’s endorsement.
Rep. Nancy Mace – Outgoing House member from SC’s 1st district, who is “strongly considering” a Senate run. She has money in her federal campaign account and is exploring polling for the seat.
Rep. Joe Wilson – Also reported to be expressing interest in running.
Wilson is known for yelling "You lie!" at Barak Obama during a speech to a joint session of Congress.
