Republican Sen. Susan Collins on Monday called for an investigation after a Colombian immigrant legally authorized to work in the U.S. was shot and killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent in Collins’ home state of Maine.
“The shooting in Biddeford requires a full and impartial investigation of what happened,” Collins wrote in a post. “It is my understanding that the Biddeford police have secured the site and that the FBI is investigating.”
Collins’ dispassionate call for a probe into ICE’s latest killing—the second time ICE shot and killed someone in as many weeks—is unlikely to mollify Mainers, a majority of whom disapprove of how the immigration enforcement agency is doing its job. And she did not condemn ICE’s actions, nor did she express sympathy for the 26-year-old man whose life was snuffed out by President Donald Trump’s immigration goons.
Indeed, the latest of ICE’s killings can be tied back to Collins’ own refusal to rein in the marauding band of murderous goons.
In January, after an ICE agent shot and killed intensive-care nurse Alex Pretti in Minnesota, Collins said she was refusing to add language to the Department of Homeland Security’s annual funding bill to try to prevent future killings.
Among the changes Collins eschewed was a requirement that ICE agents wear body cameras. Collins had supported giving ICE funding to purchase body-worn cameras, though there is no requirement that agents wear them.
And what do you know, the agents that killed the young immigrant on Monday … were not wearing body cameras, according to Maine Democratic Rep. Chellie Pingree. Agents were also not wearing cameras when they shot and killed Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston on July 7.
Protests broke out at Collins’ district offices in Maine, with demonstrators chanting, “Vote her out.”
Ultimately, the ICE shooting in Collins’ home state is just the latest problem she faces for her reelection bid.
