I'm still processing my thoughts about it. I'll try to avoid any spoilers here (?). Key points are as follows:
- At nearly three hours, it's a long movie.
- It's a fantastic visual feast.
- It's an action movie.
- The story line is very powerful, truly timeless. Christopher Nolan won't let us miss the moral point of the story - he employs powerful action sequences to hammer home the moral of the story.
- I have mixed reactions to the IMAX 4DF technology - it was kinda fun, but also kinda not-fun. I liked the wind, I was annoyed at the water, and I quickly got tired of being rocked back and forth (my friends commented that they felt like they had been physically pummeled). My main complaint with the 4DF technology is that while the film presented a third-person view of the action, the seats were delivering a first-person kinetic experience. Weird to say the least...
Getting back to the film: even though it was a very long movie, some scenes seemed perfunctory. However, those scenes delivered some key plot points.
And now, it's time for my sacrilegious conclusion: I would have loved to see Christopher Nolan stretch this out into at least two or perhaps three movies... or perhaps even deliver the story as a six or eight episode streamer. Unfortunately, that approach would not fly under the current economics of the movie business...
When it comes to The Odyssey, there's so much to absorb, and so little time...
