Universal Health Coverage For Every American Could Save $1 Trillion: Yale Study

Adopting a single-payer universal health care system in the U.S. would cut annual health expenditures by $1 trillion, even while covering every American, including those uninsured or underinsured, a new study found.

The study, which has not yet been peer reviewed, was led by researchers at the Yale School of Public Health. It attributed the largest savings to reduced pharmaceutical prices, fraudulent billing, and emergency department visits and hospitalizations.

“Healthcare costs have been rising faster than inflation, and a staggering share of that spending is consumed by administrative middlemen, soaring drug prices, and emergency care for conditions that should have been treated earlier and for less,” senior author Alison Galvani said in a press release last week on the findings.
