Amazon, already an aggressive champion of rapid delivery and the tech and logistics networks that empower that, has just revealed that it is massively expanding its drone delivery system across the country. Until now, drones bearing Amazon’s classic smile logo have been limited to select urban areas as the company learned what did and didn’t work (including drones crashing into gardens). But that period is now over.
Amazon seems confident it can nail this complex logistics task on a large scale—so large that the company says some 500 U.S. cities and towns will be hosting drone deliveries by the end of this year.
As well as helping consumers who just have to have some brand-new AirTags or another shiny new gadget, the change could dramatically impact how businesses across the nation access urgent supplies.
