Researchers at the University of Oulu studied 2,264 people, who were all 46 years old and part of a decades-long health tracking project called the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966. They compared how much coffee people drank to their body fat, muscle mass, and hormone levels.

The research was published in the peer-reviewed European Journal of Nutrition.

The results found that people who drank more coffee had less total and abdominal fat along with more muscle, even when they weighed roughly the same, by BMI, as people who drank less.

“What stood out in our findings was a distinct hormonal signature that didn’t disappear even after we took into account BMI and lifestyle factors, with several of these associations differing between men and women,” Luca Verroest, lead author of the study and doctoral researcher at the University of Oulu, told ScienceDaily.

The participants also had lower levels of certain amino acids linked to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes risk. Among men specifically, higher coffee intake was tied to healthier blood sugar regulation and higher testosterone, alongside some more nuanced hormone shifts. Women saw smaller, but still notable, hormone differences.
