Satellites complement terrestrial and undersea infrastructure in underserved or remote regions and provide redundancy, but they must be replaced every few years and are more vulnerable to weather effects and orbital debris than buried fiber systems."

My recollection is that it was the transoceanic cable that was the weight that dragged that industry into bankruptcy. At the time, there were articles about thousands of miles of undersea cable that would never be turned on. It was turned on, it just took a while.

This article is about the salvage value of damaged cable. But, that paragraph I quoted was interesting to me.
