Massive amounts of money were raised and many, many thousands of miles or railroad were built. The results was too much track laid, and most of the companies went bust leaving the investors with worthless stock.

A few men like Vanderbilt and Stanford made a ton of money. Most investors didn't.

As for the country, we got the Panic of 1873 and a 6-year recession. Then there was the Panic of 1893 which tanked the economy for another 6 years.
