The theory around why those few conservative justices came down where they came down on birthright citizenship that I've seen is that conservatives historically have not had a major problem with birthright citizenship at a conceptual level. In fact, the idea that being an American is a creed rather than an intrinsic quality that's passed on generation to generation, like being German, for instance, was the traditional conservative stance.
People being able to vote, however, is something that conservatives have always been intrinsically unsympathetic to. As I've been saying, Roberts has been known for two things for a long time: he always votes for corporations, and there is not a single voting restriction that he has not supported. Their ruling about the post-marking of mail-in ballots may have been the only exception to that.
Being blatantly unconstitutional is not a thing that the Roberts court cares about either way. Last year they gave immunity to presidents for *anything* they do in their official capacity.
