Usually, doomsday predictions don't take adaptation into consideration.
The ozone layer began to recover after we banned the chemicals that were causing the problem. When was the last time we had acid rain?
Y2K turned out to be a big nothing.
We've been at 11:59 p.m. on the nuclear annihilation clock for my entire life.
We've never had the “Big One” in California that we've been predicting for decades.
The population bomb never happened. As it became more expensive to have children, people simply had fewer of them.
And I never did buy that roll of tape I was supposed to use to protect myself from a dirty bomb.
The point is that when things start going badly, we adapt. We change our behavior, develop new technologies, create regulations, and often change the trajectory we were on. That's something most doomsday predictions fail to account for.
