Trump is pure ID and urges the Court to legal positions without any regard to the damage it could cause to the Court or other institutions.
Roberts is smarter and more calculating and playing a longer game. He is awful, the worst Chief Justice since Taney, but he isn't going to take every position a stupid, power-drunk toddler like Trump demands if he thinks it will undermine Roberts' larger goal of marginalizing democracy, disenfranchising and marginalizing non-white voters, or concentrating power long term in a unitary executive.
