Not just the Dodgers who rightly felt compelled to seek to protect a lead when they had it. It was essentially (and unintentionally) a bullpen game for the Mets too.
Roberts' decision to more-or-less triage game 5 payed off, even though the Dodgers would ultimately score enough runs and have some other chances so Game 5 could have been in-play if Roberts played it like Game 3 in 2017, when Roberts didn't triage. Sure, the Astros cheated, but burning relievers in Game 3 proved quite costly, when they would be needed in Games 4 and 5 - that infamous weekend.
