Given human nature, for capitalism to work, it requires a great deal of coordinated global regulation to beat back the corporate greed and crony capitalism we see today. You can't sell the average non-college educated person on a system that no longer provides them with a secure job with a living wage, a chance for longterm decent stable housing, healthcare, fiscally attainable higher education (or hell, even halfway decent primary public education) for their children, minimal chance of retirement, etc. Yes, almost everyone can afford to dope themselves up on cheap disposable smartphones, a flat screen TV and weed, but is that really the standard for the success of a system? Is that the promised opportunity of the American dream? As it currently stands, capitalism is a nice system for the generationally wealthy and those lucky enough to find themselves blessed with a certain level of inherent intellectual capital, but the rest are left to fend for themselves in any way possible or succumb to complete demoralization and inertia. Just drive down the road long enough in any city or rural area and you'll see that's the case.
