I have hard sided for a very specific reason. Several years ago there was a thing where in the Manila airport in the Philippines very poor luggage inspectors would take a single bullet and plant it in an outside pocket on your soft sided bag. Then announce they found it and blackmail you to pay them and security off, or they would have you arrested. IT became a huge deal, tourism dropped off, people were setting up shrink wrap stations outside the airport to wrap your bag before you got in but was useless if you just landed in the airport. So the only solution was hard side luggage.
Duterte put an end to that by having them all fired and telling them anybody caught doing it would be executed.
