Your early experiences with metal baseball bats sounds similar to my introduction to metal tennis raquets--except in my case the challenge was to keep from hitting home runs. Once I figured out how to hit the balls inside the court, I was sold, because my serves and returns were a lot harder for opponents to handle. I mostly played doubles, and the metal raquets, especially the wide-bodies, made me feel invincible at the net (at least against the other duffers I played against). But, you know, it really wasn't the tennis I grew up playing. It was a different game, a power game, a game in which points were over more quickly. After awhile, I actually missed playing with wood raquets.

As for college baseball, I understand the economics of metal bats. But I will never be comfortable with the aesthetics, the discontinuity with pro ball, and the safety issues.
