in the 1950s, into '60s UCLA and SC fought for the national championship annually in track and field. Bobby Seaman, Russ Ellis - the mile relay (now 4X400 relay) was the culmination of every meet and the meet generally came down to that one race. Larrabee (sp?) for SC and Ellis for UCLA on the anchor laps. Little Maxie Truex (again sp?) for SC was a breakthrough "distance" runner - in those days distance was the 2 miler. Refer Johnson and UCLA teammate CK Yang of Taiwan - 1-2 in the Olympic Decathlon in 1960. And our women's teams were even better - with Hall of Fame stars, Olympic Champions.
And now, 3 points in the NCAA meet - total, both teams.
Really, really sad
