In a ruling that is a total demonstration of bureaucracy (feel free to disagree), the international gymnastics organization ruled today to lower Jordan Chiles' score in the floor exercise because they found hercoach had filed her protest (because one of Jordan's skills performed in her floor routine was undervalued by the judges when adding up her score for the event) FOUR SECONDS late. (You have a minute after a routine to file a protest.)
That ruling - that four seconds was more important than getting it right - leaves a whole lot up in the air.
Will she get to keep her bronze medal? Will she have to return it? Will the International Olympic Committee change the final standings?
I believe it was the Romanian Olympic Committee that suggested that three bronze medals be awarded - one to Chiles, one to the Romanian gymnast who was orgininally announced as the winner of the bronze before the error on Chile's score was corrected by adding 1/10th of a point to the difficulty rating and a third gymnast - sorry, don't recall from what country - who was also right there at the same point level. Another thing the judges blew in that event was they penalized the Romanian gymnast one tenth of a point for stepping out of bounds but replay after the event showed her foot was very close but she did not step out of bounds.
Heart breaking for Jordan who announced earlier she plans to finish her full four years at UCLA - she has two years of eligibility remaining - and prepare for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
