and there may be others, are a little ahead of the curve right now. There are just a very few high school players each year who can come into any college program and be an impactful player deserving of the kind of money the market is bound to dictate they get.
Eventually, if things stay the way they are now, high school recruiting is pretty much going to fall off the table for the big time programs except for those few "can't miss" players that appear each year. Every coach is going to be looking more and more toward the transfer portal for replacements for those who have used up their eligibility or have also entered the transfer portal looking for better opportunities, more playing time, more money, or to better pursue a title.
Cronin is just ahead of most of them right now. It won't be long before everybody is doing what he's already doing. No one can predict the future, but it wouldn't surprise me if most incoming freshman will be mostly looking at scholarships and maybe a little money on the side until they prove themselves. The only hitch to this is if the coaches can't help themselves and give out a lot of money to freshmen on spec (and I'm talking about those who are not labeled - can't miss) just in case someone else gets someone who exceeds expectations - much like the baseball owners driving up salaries during the early free agent wars.
"Lord of the Flies" comes to mind.
