In another P5 exhibition matchup, Indiana beat Baylor 76-74 in Indianapolis. Baylor was picked to finish 7th in the Big 12.
In another indication of today's game, both teams played entirely new rosters. Not a single player in this game played for either Indiana nor Baylor last season. It isn't a huge surprise when Indiana replaced their coach, but for Scott Drew to build from scratch is a bit surprising.
The star for Indiana was San Houston State transfer Lamar Wilkerson, although it was on 6 of 15 shooting. He did make all 11 of his free throws.
The rest of their scoring was basically by 3 other players who scored 18, 17, and 9.
They basically won the game at the free throw line making 20 of 21, while Baylor made 18 of 24.
So how good are the Hoosiers? It's hard to know exactly how good Baylor is, but this still seems like a quality win.
However, they have some issues. They have one player over 6'8", and their 6-10 guy played only 18 minutes with 4 points and 2 rebounds. It looks like they will need to play small quite a bit.
With the smaller size, they were out-rebounded 44-25. THey gave up 16 offensive rebounds. That seems like a problem.
I also think their bench is suspect. 4 players did most of the scoring and rebounding. No one else contributed much.
With a smaller team, they may need to rely more on three-point shooting. They only shot 25% from the arc in this game.
Last season Indiana was a bubble team that barely missed the tournament. It wouldn't surprise me if they were about as good this season.
But then again, they are a football school.
