The early warning signs

There were two early warning signs that this season might not go so well. The first was even before it started. I had gone to several Rico Runs, but the two big men were absent from most of them so I couldn't get a handle on their abilities. But I have a friend who was there almost every day. He's well tuned in with the program as he often talks to the players and coaches. I asked his opinion of the bigs and he gave this two word answer: "Not impressed". I assume most here agree now regarding this crucial position.

The second was the close game against 27 point underdog and now 2-13 Eastern Washington, a big red flag. Every time we haven't blown out a team like this in the first game we've had a poor to mediocre season. Some here shrugged it off and made excuses for the outcome. Believe it now?

This being said, I think writing this team off at this point is premature. At full strength, we've lost only two games, both to top-10 teams and could have easily won one of them. Judging the team by the Wisconsin loss, for example, isn't fair. Missing Clark changed the whole dynamic of the offense. Instead of one of the best three-point shooters in the nation taking those shots, we had some of the worst. He's also our best defensive guard.

So the team really needs the next three games to demonstrate their potential if everyone plays. Lose to Maryland or Penn St., then go ahead and bury them. Win those plus Ohio St. and then there are winnable games in five of the next six. Let's just wait a little longer to judge.
