It’s hard to imagine him leaving, but a $10 million buyout isn’t unrealistic in today’s landscape. When that extension was signed, Cronin appeared to have a team poised to compete for a conference championship. In fact, before the season started, most analysts ranked the team anywhere from 5th to 15th. Few could have predicted the possibility of completely missing the tournament. I think most would agree this team has underachieved.
Let’s not forget this is the same university that dismissed a coach who had three Final Four appearances and had just won the conference title the year he was let go. One could argue that the real decision-makers are the donors, not the administration. If a few influential donors with deep pockets decide it’s time for a change, anything could happen.
But yes, you're right. Unlikely to happen at least this year.
