about Cronin and for me captures the essence of coaching. Cronin's personality sometimes rubs me the wrong way. He sometimes makes coaching decisions that I don't agree with. I can see that plenty of high school and college players wouldn't want to play for him. But none of that changes my opinion that Cronin is a good coach, probably good for UCLA, and to my mind is in a lot of ways what coaching is all about. I do wish that he attracted the highly rated players more often but I can also understand why he may not. I'm not totally convinced that that's a bad thing. The trick for Cronin is to win with his style of coaching and with his type of player. If he can't do that, eventually the modern basketball culture will get him and he will have to move on. That may be the reality, but I'm not sure that that reality is good for college basketball as a sport and as an extension of higher education.
