What does my marital status have to do with a discussion of UCLA basketball? Wishing I'd never shared this.
Anyway, UCLA does sell itself, and to suggest otherwise is to ignore plenty of available data on UCLA's enduring popularity, particularly for college athletes. The problem with men's basketball, currently, is that we don't have someone who understands how to talk about or market UCLA. When Cronin speaks with players, it's easy to imagine how it goes. He's smug, charmless, and socially awkward, just how he is any other time he opens his mouth.
UCLA does sell itself, but this doesn't mean the wrong coach can't hold us back, which is what we're currently seeing. The state of men's hoops, as we head into 2026-27, is less promising and less propitious than at any time over the past two decades. The roster is watered down, team morale is low, and there is no buzz surrounding the program.
This will likely be Cronin's final year as our coach, so that's the good news. It's a shame he's lasted this long.
