that Altman is retiring - last year the rumors were quite loud. I guess he tried it one more year and just couldn't do it. I was thinking he would retire soon after the end of last season or maybe even late in the season. I can only speculate, but I'm assuming he may not have wished to go out on a losing season and wanted to come back for another season and go out a winner. Coaching takes a lot out of you and maybe he just found that he didn't have what it takes anymore and the will just wasn't strong enough to carry him through one last season. It looks like he tried, thus the lateness of his announcement - just days before this season begins. After seeing your post and looking into it, I half expected that maybe he was announcing now his retirement and for it to take effect at the end of the season. That's not the case - it's immediate. It appears that he realized he just didn't have the juice anymore. He was a great one. his teams always played hard and he won a lot of games. I always liked him as a coach. When Oregon hired him I thought he would bring a national championship to Oregon. It just shows just how difficult it is to accomplish that feat.
