Ucla is a mess. They've elevated identity over merit. When an organization elevates identity over merit, they get more identity and less merit, less success. That's what we see happening.
The athletic department is bankrupt, the football team is defacto FCS quality, the stadium deal is the worst on the west coast, the basketball team is floundering.
Less success.
(The only people who care about the Olympic and country club sports are the parents of the players on that team. Nobody cares, so don't delude yourself that all is well as long as we have a good women's basketball or gymnastics team.)
Ucla itself is the problem. Until they realize it and outsource the Bruin football team, they will continue to be the problem. More identity, less success. More hiring, firing and failure.

To Ucla, as Petros Papadakis said, "everybody sucks". Well, guess what? It's abundantly clear that Ucla sucks more than everybody.
